ASA to Fund Academic Scholarships for Surgical Assisting Students

The Association of Surgical Assistants is pleased to announce funding for two $1,000 academic scholarships for surgical assisting students. Applications are due by March 15. ASA and Operation Billing to Offer Mission Scholarships for KenyaRelief

The Association of Surgical Assistants, in partnership with Operation Billing, is offering two scholarships to volunteers who participate in a medical mission with KenyaRelief in 2019. The scholarship would provide $1,500 to reimburse the surgical assistant’s expenses. Check the website for details.

Joint Commission Director to Give Spring Keynote

The Association of Surgical Assistants is pleased to announced that Andrew C. Bland, MD, MBA, FAAP, FACP Medical Director for the Joint Commission’s Division of HealthCare Quality Evaluation, will give the keynote presentation at the ASA/NSAA Joint Conference in Chicago, Ill., on April 26, 2019. An ASA representative connected with Dr. Bland during the Health Care Association Forum, sponsored by the Joint Commission, in September 2018.


ASA began educating risk managers about the role of the surgical assistant in the exhibit hall in 2016. Last year, ASA members presented a mock surgery to help risk managers understand the various surgical assistant credentials and why they need to know who is practicing in their operating rooms.

Call for Writers

The Association of Surgical Assistants is endeavors to publish the first textbook for the profession of surgical assisting. If you are an experienced author who would be interested in contributing to this textbook, please contact ASA.

ASA to Hold Fall 2019 Meeting in Atlanta

The Association of Surgical Assistants is pleased to announce that the Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel will host the Fall Annual Meeting, Sept. 27-28, 2019. The hotel is located at One Hartsfield Centre Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30354. ASA is planning DaVinci hands-on workshops in ENT and Thoracic specialties at the training facility in nearby Norcross, Georgia. Details about the meeting and hands on workshops will be announced soon.
